His first participation in a poker tournament originated through the website of online poker Poker Stars, where as amateur Moneymaker won a ticket to play the World Series of Poker, with all expenses covered by the site, and this became so the 1st person to be world champion by qualifying through online poker, having this phenomenon won the title of "Moneymaker Effect"! His performance in the 2003 WSOP was fantastic and it topped 829 players competed in the final table with players like Phil Ivey and Sam Farha!
